Hair and Makeup are as important a role in a production as the set and choreography. Without it, actors don't fit the time period and it's difficult for an audience to buy into the world we are creating.
Although there will be some students around to help you with your makeup, you will need to prepare most of it yourself. Look at the tutorials and links below and practice at home. Before you know it, you will be a master! |
ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BRING IN A small, I REPEAT A small, laundry basket with their name clearly labeled. Sharpie works best. They will put their clothing in it while changing, their make up in it when not in use. It's their portable cubby.
HairYour hair needs to be appropriate for the turn of the centrury late 1800's, through 1910. They only washed a few times a year. So your hair would be big and knotted. Mens hair would be greasy looking. Boys would be unkept. Men would be combed with very straight lines. Women would have very big hair. Lots of teasing. Lots of curls. Everyone, including men, need bobby pins. Lots and lots of bobbypins. They hold on hats, wigs, microphones etc. Also - lots and lots of gel and hairspray. The cheaper the better. It holds better (harder) which you need under the lights. Fruity stuff is very bad. With the sweat you will produce you will not smell good. Please refrain from scented sprays. HS girls who play adults here are youtube links on how to do your hair. curls and height will help

Use rollers, and LOTS OF HAIRSPRAY - Tease your hair t. Turn your head upside down and get lots of volume. Stage hair is very different than regular hair styles.
Please note that not all methods of curling work for everyone. Copious amounts of gel and hairspray should be used. NO BANGS. Do not have your first try be the day of the show. A curling iron method is the most time consuming and gives the least volume. Curls will melt under the lights so more hairspray.

Make upDepending on who you play, your makeup should show status.
Neutral colors are needed. You also need white to add highlights. While we will help students backstage - the cast is so large we can not do everyone' makeup. We ask that you go over the links below so you and your student have an idea as to what is expected. Baby wipes and/or Vaseline to take stage make up off is best. We will help elementary students with makeup but they need to provide their own and we encourage them to put it on at home and we can enhance. |
