Everyone can be a part of Masquers
Masquers is a unique organization. The minimum requirements are 20 hours for the entire year and help fund raise both with Compass Rose , Haunted Playground, Shriners events our and our main program campaign in late October and November. We have many, many students who vary their schedules with other clubs, athletics, and academics and enjoy Masquers at the same time. So it is completely doable. Just like there are students who only do athletics, there are students who only do theatre. Their hours are more. So it is completely up to you and your student(s) and how they want to manage their time.
We have meetings the first Thursday of every month right after school which does not interfere with a team. If they have a meet that same day, they just talk to a student officer to get the info they missed. Very easy.
For example, one of our student Masquers officers is a Varsity Volleyball player and captain of the team. In the Fall, she makes all meetings, even if she has to leave early occasionally. She fund raises. She helps out back stage on days she has a later practice or when her schedule allows. For shows she helps with concessions and anything else we may need. In the winter and spring, she does shows with us. A very large portion of our students do the fall and winter season with us and do a sport in the Spring (and can still participate in the Variety Show or other opportunities in some way). Some students come 20 hours a year and enjoy the camaraderie and experience. It's all very personal and very do-able.
A quick overview of our year
We do 2 main stage shows a year, and they line up with the athletic seasons. If your student(s) want to be involved in a show full time, it is the same time-frame as a commitment for an athletic team.
There is a Fall production. (Sept - December) Fall athletic season
There is a Winter production (January through March) Winter athletic season
There are numerous Spring concerts, travel opportunities and performances (April-May) Spring athletic season
Please note there are sometimes two options for the winter season in theatre and in some instances, students join us for the One Act after their winter sports end and before their spring sport begins.
There is tech crew where students work on all things back stage - sewing, painting, building, lights, props etc. Everyone learns everything and than as time goes by they fall into something that seems to fit for them. But we ask everyone to try and be open to new ideas and new experiences. Although tech crew members have a little bit more flexibility with their schedule, we encourage a full five-day a week commitment so they can learn and grow with their team. Those with the most hours are given first choice as to what they can do to run the show.
There are performers. They are auditioned and cast on a per show basis. Their schedule could be every day or occasionally depending on what role they land. Performers are asked not to do a sport at the same time because the commitment is too much. That being said, we have worked with many students to allow them to do both a sport and the show, but BOTH activities must be prepared to give some.
There are orchestra personnel (pit). They audition in late Septmeber and rehearse 2-3 days a week in October. Then they start coming to every rehearsal full time in November.
Masquers is a very fulfilling, fun place to be. The students are excellent. The experiences are fabulous and it makes for a great addition to a resume. Please check out additional pages throughout our web site for more information or find a student officer. They are very friendly and very approachable.
